Photographs help a great deal. A wide shot showing the area in context and a close shot of the growth itself usually tells us most of what we need to know before anyone comes out.

What to Have Ready
Four things make a phone call far more useful. Where the growth is and roughly how much of it there is. How long it has been there, and whether it appeared suddenly or crept in over seasons. What you know about water reaching that part of the building — a leak, a flood, a sump that runs constantly, a downspout that discharges close to the wall. And whether the affected surface is masonry, drywall, framing, insulation or carpet.
That last one matters more than people expect, because it largely determines whether the material can be cleaned or has to come out. Growth on painted block is a different job from the same area of growth on drywall paper.
